FOREWORD THIS IS THE THIRD VOLUME in the series of Memorial Tributes issued periodically by the National Academy of En- gineering to honor the cleceasecl members ant! foreign asso- ciates of the Academy. Publication of this volume contributes to the observance of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the NAE on December 5, 1964. It is intended that these volumes will stanct as an enduring record of the many contributions of engineering to the benefit of human- kind. In all cases, the authors of the tributes tract personal knowlecige of the interests and engineering accomplish- ments of the deceased members and foreign associates. The National Academy of Engineering is a private orga- nization established in 1964 to share in the responsibility given the National Academy of Sciences under its congres- sional charter signed by President LincoIn in IS63 to exam- ine and report on questions of science ancT engineering at the request of the federal government. Individuals are electect to the National Academy of Engineering on the basis of signif- icant contributions to engineering theory and practice and to the literature of engineering or demonstrated unusual ac- complishments in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology. Alexander H. Flax Home Secretary X1
