Diagrams showing motor regions of the brain. Basal ganglia are a group of three brain regions, or nuclei--caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus. Figure 2.6a is a three-dimensional view showing the location of those nuclei in the brain. Figure 2.6b shows those structures in a vertical cross-sectional view. The major output pathways of the basal ganglia arise from the globus pallidus and pars reticulata of the substantia nigra. Their main target is the thalamus.
