Appendix A Statement of Task At the request of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES), the National Academies shall review the investments by BES in catalysis science research.1 The review will: ⢠Examine the BES research portfolio in catalysis and identify whether and how this portfolio has advanced fundamental science in this area. ⢠Discuss how the BES research portfolio in catalysis contributes and is likely to contribute to immediate and long-term national energy goals, such as reducing the Nationâs dependence on foreign sources of energy. 1 For the purposes of the review, BES catalysis research is defined as the grants portfolio funded in the Catalysis Science (formerly Catalysis and Chemical Transformations) critical research area. 95
