Agnew is a technical director at the General Motors Research Laboratories, where he has directed research in many aspects of automotive engineering, including environmental, health, and socioeconomic issues. He was a director of the International Combustion Institute, has served on working committees in the National Research Council, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers, and Office of Technology Assessment, serves on industrial advisory boards for Pennsylvania State and Purdue University, and is an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology evaluator of mechanical engineering education programs. He is currently a member of the NRC Engineering Research Board. Arden L. Bement, Jr., is vice president of technical resources, TRW Inc. Dr. Bement is currently serving as chairman of the Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems, National Research Council. At TRW his responsibilities include identification and evaluation of emerging technologies and recommending product, material, and process development projects. Bernard Bndiansky is Gordon McKay Professor of Structural Mechanics and Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering at Harvard University. Dr. Budiansky is a member of the National Research Council Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board. He is a Foreign Member of both the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Danish Center for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. A. E. Dukler is Distinguished University Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Houston. Dr. Dukler served previously as dean of engineering at the University. Martin Goland is president of Southwest Research Institute. Mr. Goland has served on numerous committees such as the NASA advisory committee on materials, structures and aircraft dynamics, the Naval Research Advisory

Haughton has been dean of engineering at Santa Clara University since 1982. Before moving to Santa Clara, Dr. Haughton was with the IBM Corporation for 25 years, where his work focused on airbearing research, machine design, and computer peripheral products. George W. Housner is C. F. Braun Professor of Engineering, emeritus at the California Institute of Technology. He has served as president of the Seismological Society of America, the International Association of Earthquake Engineering, and the Earthquake Research Institute. Arthur E. Humphrey is vice president and provost at Lehigh University. He has been a member of the National Science Foundation Engineering Directorate Advisory Board since 1979. Dr. Humphrey has authored or coauthored more than 180 technical publications and 3 books on a variety of topics, including biochemistry, food technology, and fermentation processes. Ernest S. Kuh is professor of electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. From 1973 to 1980 he served as dean of the College of Engineering at UCB. Dr. Kuh has also been visiting professor at Imperial College, London; Technical University, Denmark; Osaka University; Kobe University; Technical University, Munich; and Waseda University. William W. Lang is currently program manager, Acoustics Technology, IBM Corporation. Dr. Lang also serves as president of the Noise Control Foundation and has been active in the development of national and international standards. In 1971, he was a founding member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering of the U.S.A., and in 1974, a cofounder of the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering. Ronald M. Latanision is Shell Distinguished Professor of Materials Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also serves as director of the Materials Processing Center at MIT's School of Engineering. Robert W. Lucky is executive director, research, Communications Sciences Division of AT&T Bell Laboratories. He also serves on the Engineering Advisory Boards of the National Science Foundation and of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Lucky is currently a member of the United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. Keith W. McHenry, Jr., is vice president for research and development for the Amoco Oil Company. Dr. McHenry also serves on the Industrial Advisory Board of the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Engineering. He is president-elect of the Industrial Research Institute, and is a past member of the U.S. National Committee for the World Petroleum Congress. James Y. Oldshue is vice president, mixing technology, Mixing Equipment Co., Inc., a unit of General Signal. Dr. Oldshue has served as president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and as president of the American Association of Engineering Societies. In 1983 he received the Victor Marquez Award from the InterAmerican Confederation of Chemical

APPENDIX E 68 Engineers. He is active in the World Federation of Engineering Organize tions and presents seminars and continuing education courses on fluid mixing processes throughout the world. Harold W. Paxton is U.S. Steel Professor, Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Paxton has served previously as vice president for research, U.S. Steel Corporation, chairman of the General Research Committee of the American Iron and Steel Institute, president of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, and president of the Metallurgical Society, AIME. He is a former U.S. Representative on the Technical Committee of International Iron and Steel Institute and an honorary member of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan. Walter A. Rosenblith is Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His fields of interest include electrical activity of the nervous system and brain function; sensory communications; and science and technology in the university and society. From 1982 to 1986 Professor Rosenblith served as foreign secretary of the National Academy of Sciences and chairman of the Office of International Affairs, National Research Council. At present he is chairman of the Chinese University Development Project. H. Guyford Stever is foreign secretary, of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Stever has also served as Science and Technology Advisor to the President of the United States, and as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; director of the National Science Foundation; president of the Carnegie Mellon University; and professor of aeronautical engineering at MIT. Dr. Stever is currently serving as chairman of the National Research Council Panel examining redesign of the space shuttle solid rocket booster for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Mac Elwyn Van Valkenburg is dean of the college of engineering at the University of Illinois. Dr. Van Valkenburg also serves as chairman of the Transnational Relations Committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. From 1974 to 1976 he served on the National Research Council Board on Engineering Manpower and Educational Policy. Albert R. C. Westwood is corporate director of research and development for the Martin Marietta Corporation. He serves also on the Commission on Engineering and Technical Studies of the National Research Council, on the boards of directors of Martin Marietta Energy Systems (Oak Ridge) and the Metallurgical Society, and as vice president of the Industrial Research Institute. F. Karl Willenbrock is executive director of the American Society for Engineering Education. For the previous 10 years, Dr. Willenbrock was Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Southern Methodist University, also serving as dean of the school from 1976 to 1981.
