A colorless, liquified gas that is corrosive and has an
irritating, pungent odor. Ammonia gas is capable of
forming explosive mixtures with air. It is available at
a commercial strength of 99.5% NH3.
Use:
Used with chlorine during disinfection for control of
trihalomethanes, tastes, and odors.
Purity Requirements:
A maximum dosage of 5 mg of NH3/liter of water was con-
sidered, and at that dosage anhydrous ammonia is not known
to contribute any contaminants that adversely affect the
potability of drinking water.
