Contributing Scientists

More than 15 percent of all professional astronomers in the United States contributed actively in some way to the astronomy and astrophysics survey for the 1990s. Approximately 300 astronomers served formally on one or more of the 15 panels established by the survey committee to advise the committee on important issues affecting subfields within astronomy. Many hundreds of other astronomers made valuable contributions by supplying written advice to the committee, through their participation at open meetings at the American Astronomical Society or at other professional meetings, or through informal discussions held by committee members throughout the United States.

The reports of most of those panels appear in the separately published Working Papers (NRC, 1991) issued simultaneously with this volume. Abbreviated versions of the reports of the Computing and Data Processing Panel and the Status of the Profession Panel appear as Chapter 5 and Appendix B, respectively, in this volume. The report of the Science Opportunities Panel appears only as Chapter 2 and not in the Working Papers. The committee also established a working group to examine the potential of lunar astronomy. This appendix lists the scientists who served on panels* or as members of a working group on behalf of the survey.
