THE EXPERT PAPERS that formed the basis for the development of ~ the summary and recommendations presented in Part I are included in the order presented at the 1~/: day workshop. Each speaker was asked to carefully review the literature in their own field of expertise as it related to the seven questions posed to the committee, make critical comments on the relevant research including their own work, and end with their individual recommendations. After the workshop, each author was given the opportu- nity to revise or add to their papers based on committee questions. The papers were then submitted in writing and used by the committee in the development of Part I. Although focused on the relationship of body com- position to physical performance in the military services, these chapters also provide a state-of-the-art review of body composition and physical performance that is relevant for many settings and occupations. 29
