PART I
Overview

The two chapters of this part provide the background and summary of the committee's study. Chapter 1 describes the topics undertaken in this third phase of the committee's work and the relationships between these topics and earlier work done by the committee. It also presents the issues addressed in this book in light of broad questions in human learning and performance.

Chapter 2 summarizes the committee's key findings and conclusions for each chapter. Three types of conclusions are presented: those that summarize implications from completed research on each topic, those that call for needed research, and those that have practical implications for training or performance. The committee's detailed conclusions are presented in the final sections of each chapter.
