Chapter 1 provides the background for the report. It describes the task presented to the Committee on Military Nutrition Research (CMNR) by the Military Nutrition Division, U.S. Army Research Institute for Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command; summarizes the relevant background material; and presents the committee’s findings. The Army posed six questions to the committee; these questions are also listed in Chapter 1. In addition, Chapter 1 presents an overview of the relevant areas of concern, a review of the specific food components that the CMNR was asked to consider for their potential to enhance performance, and a summary of the committee’s interpretation of the current scientific knowledge in these areas. Chapter 2 presents the committee’s answers to the questions posed by the Army and its conclusions. Chapter 2 also includes the general and specific recommendations of the CMNR.
