Abstract
On December I8. 1991. tI,en President Bush signed She ante...! Surface Transportation Effi-
ciency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 This landmark legislation provides funding authorization for highways,
highway safety, and public transportation for the 1992 to 1997 time period; The ISTEA- explicitly
recognizes the need to "improve access to ports and airports, the Nation's link to world commerce."
This brochure is the result of joint cooperation between the Maritime Administration and the Federal
Highway Administration and it identifies, for the port community, metropolitan planning
organizations, and state transportation planners, opportunities within the TSTEA to address specific
port-related policies and projects, and provides a strategic focus for insuring that port protects and
plans are considered through the metropolitan and statewide planning programs.

Abstract
Table VM-1 shows the estimated Vehicle Miles of Travel ~MT) fo. the current year and revised
figures for the previous year by passenger cars, buses, and trucks on the rural Interstate System, other
rural arterial roads, other rural roads, urban Interstate System, and other urban streets. VM-] also
shows the number of vehicles registered by type and by total fuel consumption. Also included are the
calculated average annual miles of travel, average miles travelled per gallon, and average fuel
consumption for each vehicle type. In addition, Table VM-1 provides the FHWA estimates of
person-miles of travel.
Source of Data
The rural and urban sweet categories are based on a summery of highway functional systems

Abstract
The NHPN-V2.0 is a data base of the major highways in the U.S. It is a foundation for analytic
studies of highway performance, vehicle routing and scheduling problems, and mapping purposes.
The NHPN-V2.0 is based on the U.S. Geological Survey's I:l,000,000 Digital Line Graphs (DEG).
Some urban links were digitized Dom state-supplied maps to assure up-to-date alignments. The
NHPN-V2.0 contains verified transportation attributes, such as sign route, FHWA National Highway

Abstract
The National Information Management System (NIMS) managed under FHWA's long-term
pavement performance (LTPP) studies now includes actual traffic data collected at monitored
general pavement studies sites. The data covers traffic and truck volumes, weight distributions of
axle groups by vehicle type, and equivalent single-axle load estimates. The infonnation is based on
vehicle counts collected at more than 470 pavement study sites and vehicle weights measured at
nearly 400 sites. The raw data are stored in the Central Traffic Database (CTDB), which includes
hourly vehicle counts,.individual vehicle weight records, daily vehicle totals, and axle group
distributions. The information is then evaluated, filtered, and summarized for inclusion in NIMS.
