Topic of Presentation/Discussion: The Polish delegation was briefed on the goal of the Center: to help make the customers of the utilities in the steel, foundry, aluminum, glass, and mining industries more competitive. The Center is supported by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the research arm of the U.S. electric utility industry. They help solve the industry's environmental problems. The Center has no laboratory facilities and their function is rather arranging, financing, and communicating the results of the EPRI's research and development findings.

Tour Description: Tour started with a brief description of the regenerative MgO scrubber process. The delegates were then given a tour through the plant SO₂ scrubber control room, #2 SO₂ and particulate scrubbers, centrifuge/dryer control room, dryer platform, and bulk chemical storage silos. Tour Description: The Ashland Oil Company operates a plant in Philadelphia which makes plastics. The plant produces about 60 million tons of polyester each year. The mangers of the plant have recently designed and installed an innovative energy recovery and pollution control system. This system collects volatile organic vapors from the tanks holding the petroleum feedstock and directs them to a combustion chamber where they are used to fuel one of the thermal processes required to produce the polyester. In the absence of this system, the volatile vapors would be released to the atmosphere, creating an air pollution problem and wasting the energy value of the volatile organics. The tour included a description of the polyester production process and examination of the energy recovery and pollution control system.
