The attrition rate is obtained by subtracting the Ph.D. completion rate for a given year from 1 00.0%. The rates for 1960-64 are relatively constant (see 1g85 Report), indicating that most individuals entering graduate school during that ' - riod had either received a Ph.D. or dropped out of graduate school by 1987. For later years, the Ph.D. completion rates decline With each year. The attr tion rates for these years undoubtedly Include students who are still enrolled In graduate school but who had not earned a Ph.D. by 1987, as well as those who had actually dropped out of graduate school. The median elapsed time from baccalaureate to bioscience doctorate degree in 1987 was 8.1 years; it Is therefore probable that many of the graduate students entering in years after 1980 are still working toward a doctorate degree. Completion and attrition rates have not been calculated for the later years. The Ph.D. completion rates will most likely increase and the attrition rates decrease once 1988 Ph.D.s are added to the calculations, and shouW continue to do so with the inclusion of each additional year of Ph.D.s.
