APPENDIX A—SYMPOSIUM AGENDA
Improving the Interaction between Sciences and Policy in the Gulf of Maine Region
A symposium organized by the National Research Council's Ocean Studies Board with assistance from the Maine Coastal Program
November 1 - 4, 1994
Kennebunkport, Maine
AGENDA
The Gulf of Maine Symposium, part of a symposium series that includes California and the Gulf of Mexico, will bring together practitioners in the natural and social sciences, environmental managers, policy-makers, and business interests from around the Gulf of Maine region and from other areas of the United States and Canada. The symposium will examine the interface between coastal/marine science and policy with a special focus on exploring ways to improve the interaction between scientists and managers. Participants will hear a series of papers on the status of science/policy integration in the region and possible avenues for strengthening that integration. A series of small, facilitated issue groups will be formed to provide participants the opportunity to be creative and define specific initiatives appropriate to the region. A summary of symposium discussions and papers will be published following the symposium.

The moderator of an issue group will introduce speakers and panel members and describe expectation of sponsors, describe the schedule, and lay out issue group goals and objectives. Each Issue Group covering one of the three topics will be divided into Subgroups of 15 to 20 individuals each, to facilitate meaningful and interactive small group discussions.
Each Subgroup will be coordinated by a chairperson.
One or two rapporteurs, generally drawn from the OSB Committee on Coastal Science and Policy Interactions, will be responsible for synthesizing the major themes of the discussion orally at the meeting, and in written form in the report to be published after the symposium.
The facilitator will keep the discussions focused and record major points made.
The sessions will begin with 15 minute presentations by authors of the Issue Group papers, listed above. After the presentations, the Subgroups will divide, and a general discussion of these papers and their relation to the plenary papers will occur.
