Physicians' limited training in occupational and environmental medicine, coupled with this expanding need, prompted the Institute of Medicine to examine the role of primary care physicians in occupational and environmental medicine and to seek ways of fostering their participation in these important areas of health care. TARGET AUDIENCE AND FOCUS OF CoNCERN While recognizing the important contributions of nonphysician health care providers, the study focuses its efforts on physicians in order to examine specific problems and offer specific recommendations for one health care discipline.
