NttSA National Aeronautics and Space Administration Washington. D.C. 20546 Reoly to Ann at S MAR02 ~ Dr. Arden L. Chairman Commission on Engineering and technical Systems National Research Council 2101 Constitution Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20418 Dear Dr. Bcment: On February 5, 1988, Daniel iderman and I met with several members of the NRC staff to discuss the present status of our interest in having a short workshop to explore the nature and scope of angincering design issuce associated with the Space Station program. Present from NRC were J. Clayton, C. Little, W. Michael, and R. M. Obermann. As a result of those discussions, Tic wish to reinstitute the planning for such a workshop that was moving forward about a year ago, before the creation of the special NRC Co~nittce on Space Station. We still believe that such a workshop necde to examine the interaction of the cnginecring foaturce of the Station with the physiological and psychological necde of the crew, with the capability of the space trane- portation infrastructure, and with the planned operational procedures, including tcleco~nunications and data procces- ing. We vie. the workshop as a potential starting point for further studies. It would be most helpful in our planning cycle if such a workshop could be conducted in May or June of 1988. We look forward to continuing our productive working rcla- tionship with the National Research Council. S i ricers l y, ~~ fast William P. Raney Special Assistant Office of Space Station cc: S'F.
